Matters of self-esteem and confidence
High levels of self-esteem and confidence are beneficial. When they are prevalent in you, you take better care of yourself and allow yourself to reach your full potential.
When you have low self-esteem and are filled with doubt, you don’t feel as if you’re worthy of being happy or successful in life. Low self esteem and confidence can negatively affect your relationships and your job. You’ll also be less able to cope with life’s everyday stresses when you have low self-esteem. People with low self-esteem might want the same things from life that people with high self-esteem have, but they generally don’t have the motivation to get what they want.
What you tell yourself matters
You can talk yourself into success or failure in life by how well you think you’ll succeed or how badly you think you’ll fail. For example, when women are told that men are better at math and science, women perform worse in those areas. Men who are told they are better at math and science than women are, do better. Our beliefs shape our outcomes.
The effects of low self-esteem and lack of confidence
Low self-esteem and lack of confidence can be caused by a traumatic childhood experience, such as neglect, separation or abuse. People with those experiences can often be helped from talking with a trained therapist. People who receive no help for low self-esteem and lack of confidence can develop negative conditions such as depression. They might still view themselves as victims who live in a hostile world. This leads to feelings of helplessness.
The benefits of high self-esteem and confidence
When you have help to build your self-esteem and confidence, you start to think positively about yourself and to recognise what you can achieve. You’ll be able to think of yourself as being a valuable person who has something to contribute to another person and to society. You’ll like yourself and feel as if others will like you, too. You’ll then start taking better care of yourself, often looking, dressing and feeling better, which increases your self-esteem and confidence.
