Is your fear or phobia stopping you from enjoying your life?

The good news is that you don’t have to let your fears or phobia restrict your life any longer. Almost all phobias can be helped and improved with our treatment program.

How does it feel to have a phobia?

Almost everyone has an irrational fear or two; mice, spiders or your annual dental checkup. However for most people, these fears are minor. But, when fears become so severe that they cause tremendous anxiety and interfere with your normal life, they are called phobias.

What is a phobia?

A phobia is defined as an anxiety disorder that is characterised by an abnormally intense or irrational fear of a situation, animal or object.

There is a large difference between a fear and a phobia. Its the difference between getting nervous when you see a Rottweiler or German Shepherd (a normal fear) and refusing to go for a walk in case you see a dog (a phobic response). Feeling a little queasy when getting an injection or giving blood (a normal fear response) compared with avoiding necessary medical treatment and checkups because you are terrified of needles.

What are the symptoms of a phobia?

There are a whole range of adrenalin-induced, physical symptoms that you might experience when you are faced with the situation that triggers your phobia. They include: nausea, a churning stomach, heart palpitations, muscle tension and pain, chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness or light-headedness.

None of these symptoms make for a pleasant experience, especially when they are combined with other non-physical symptoms such as anxiety, panic attacks, fear or detachment. At worst, you may even feel as if you are going to die.

Avoid being in a phobic situation?

Like many other phobia sufferers, you may try to cope by avoiding the trigger of your phobia. The high levels of anxiety and fear you experience when you confront your trigger situation means that you go to great lengths to avoid them. Not only is this tiring and demoralising, it is often impractical and can impact on other people lives as well as your own.

If avoidance of the object, activity or situation that triggers your phobia interferes with your normal functioning or keeps you from doing things you would otherwise enjoy, its time to seek help.

Seek expert advice and support

For everyone whose life is affected by a phobia, facing your fear, acknowledging the problem and seeking help is the key to recovering. It is important to know that phobias are common, having a phobia does not mean you are crazy. Remember that you are not alone, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, around 10% of adults are affected by phobias.

You should consider treatment for your phobia if:

  • It causes intense and disabling fear, anxiety, and panic
  • You recognise that your fear is excessive and unreasonable
  • You avoid certain situations and places because of your phobia
  • The avoidance interferes with your normal routine or causes significant distress
  • You had the phobia for at least six months.
