FAQs

In essence hypnotherapy is learning whilst your mind is relaxed. We all operate from a set of beliefs and assumptions that we have stored throughout our lives in our subconscious mind. Even though some of these assumptions and beliefs continually limit the progress we make in our lives, they often remain unnoticed. When life becomes unusually challenging or stressful the assumptions that we have always operated from can no longer provide us with the framework required to cope. Whether we realise it consciously or not, it can then be time to review our beliefs and learn in order to move forward with our life.

Hypnotherapy can help people make the positive changes they desire. Visiting an experienced hypnotherapist is helpful to make sustainable and fast changes, such as assisting the development of something new or stopping a problematic behaviour.
(See – When is hypnotherapy useful and who can it help?)

Hypnotherapy is invaluable at stressful times in our lives; it is also enormously helpful for people struggling to overcome a behavioural pattern or significant event in their life. For individuals interested in self-development, hypnotherapy can help unearth why they feel stuck or limited. In these scenarios, hypnotherapy can help people create the positive changes they desire.

A hypnotherapy session provides the ideal environment to review the inflexible and outdated beliefs you have been adhering to. Typically people who come for hypnotherapy sessions experience one or more of the following:

  • Anxiety
  • Relationship Problems
  • Loss or Bereavement
  • Loss of Confidence and Self-Esteem
  • Phobias
  • Limited Beliefs
  • Requirement for Grow and Development

The new beliefs that clients can access during a hypnotherapy session are based in the present, instead of past experiences, allowing clients to move forward with fulfilled lives.

Hypnotherapy works by teaching people to deeply relax, allowing individuals to connect with their wisdom and knowing. Deep relaxation (as in trance) allows people to access the resources of their whole mind. Suggestions that surface during trance seem to have a profound effect on the mind.

For therapy to succeed it needs a competent therapist and a clear objective to be agreed between the client and therapist. Hypnotherapy is a learning procedure so the client must be willing to learn something new, applying it as necessary. With hypnotherapy you will be learning in a relaxed state but you must also have a conscious plan for development.

It is always important that you complete research before embarking on a course of treatment. One of the most useful ways is to speak to an experienced hypnotherapist who is happy to answer your questions. We offer a free twenty-minutes consultation for exactly that reason and would be delighted to help answer any queries.

Hypnotherapy is a safe and natural process that allows us to access a state of mind called the trance state. Trance is a place between sleeping and waking. Everyone accesses the trance state daily by drifting in and out of daydreams and sleep; therefore it is a natural and completely safe experience. When you are in the trance state you are present, conscious and hearing; only part of the mind is hypnotised, therefore you are always in control of the situation.

Unlike therapies that use drugs, hypnosis has no side effects and can safely improve the physical and mental aspects of common problems such as addiction, overeating, drinking, behavioural issues and intense emotions.

Treatment with hypnotherapy is not recommended for people with schizophrenia or any other psychotic condition. There are no other risks, however we strongly recommend that you work with a highly-experienced hypnotherapist such as Mr. Marar in order to gain sustainable, positive results.

The vast majority of people can access the trance state, however their experience will always vary. The trance state can be light or deep and both can be extremely effective. An experienced hypnotherapist can do excellent work with conscious clients as well as those in the trance state; meaning you do not have to be in the trance state to gain benefit.

In a typical session the client will talk about their problems and explain the difficulties of the situation. The therapist will ask the client to relax, deepening their relaxation by talking to them. At MH Hypnotherapy we seat our clients in a high-backed chair, so that their head is always in a supported position.

Whilst the practitioner is speaking to the client they deliver a message to facilitate the learning that needs to happen. This can be done through a reminder, some suggestions, or a story. Suggestion is a very helpful technique in hypnosis as it helps someone to see a problem from a different point of view. The client is reminded that people deal with things in different ways and that when we relax we can deal with situations more easily. Suggestion helps people see at a subconscious level, what they are doing that is not useful and reminds them that there are better ways of achieving the results they require.

After the therapist has delivered their message, the client is called back into a fully-conscious state. There are many different approaches and styles in hypnotherapy including: suggestion, analysis, subliminal, NLP Hypnotherapy and solution-focused.

Everyone is individual so it is hard to generalise, however the number of sessions will depend on several factors. At the initial free consultation we are able to give more information based on individual circumstances. We offer a free chat by phone or in person to give you a more personal
assessment of how many sessions you might benefit from as results will always vary from person to person.

The following information is provided as a guideline for clients seeking help with anxiety, phobias and relationship issues:

How long will it take before I recover from my anxiety?

At MH Hypnotherapy we have found that when working with sufferers of panic attacks, the condition can usually improve in few sessions*.
However if an individual anxiety has become a generalised, long standing condition (where the person lives in dread, without any feelings of happiness or joy), then more work will be needed * Please see disclaimer below.

In our treatment sessions we teach our clients how to manage their response to what their minds and bodies perceive as an emergency. The results we achieve are real and long lasting because we teach clients how to deal with these problems for themselves.* Please see disclaimer below.

How long will it take before I recover from my phobia?

Hypnotherapy NLP. If you are one of the many people who live with their fear on a regular basis, we have good news. You are able to overcome your anxiety and fear, no matter how out of control it may feel. At MH Hypnotherapy we regularly help clients overcome their phobias and fears.

How long will it take before I feel better about my relationship?

Our approach to dealing with relationship issues is based on research and proven clinical methods. As well as helping people overcome trauma and hurt it helps to integrate effective learning of which we use a very practical and sustainable approach.

Clients are often surprised by the time it takes for them to feel significantly better. People experience the real sense of relief that comes from a deep understanding of their situation and the feeling that they are back in control.* Please see disclaimer below.

The methods we use are based on research and the best of proven clinical methods. Apart from the therapeutic support that we give, it is essential to realise that to be successful the work requires a commitment to learning and using the methods daily.

No, although doctors do refer clients for hypnotherapy, it is certainly not a requirement for most conditions. Therefore you are welcome to refer yourself.

It is quite normal for people to come for help with several issues. Sometimes it is possible to deal with more than one issue at once and other times it is necessary to deal with one issue at a time.

Self-hypnosis is a useful process that we teach our clients so they can continue moving forward once their treatment sessions have finished. However it is important to understand that when you are using self-hypnotherapy you are not getting the expertise and therapeutic support you may need in order to identify the issues you are dealing with. If you are using hypnotherapy to help deal with anxiety, depression, or psychological issues and you are not improving then you should see a professional therapist instead of relying on self-hypnosis.

Eric Kandel is at the forefront of medical research into the brain and subconscious mind. He sees the distinction between the subconscious mind and the conscious mind very clearly as his extensive research has led him and many other eminent scientists to conclude that the conscious brain serves us beautifully and is a very useful tool when we need to decide between two things. However, when life presents us with complex situations it is our ability to access the subconscious mind that will enable the achievement of better quality answers.

When we access our entire mind, we find that we know the answers we need to move forward in the situation. Using hypnotherapy we can learn to access the trance state and connect to the wisdom of the subconscious mind. When we do this, we realise that we are no longer limited to only playing brass or stringed instruments; we suddenly have the full power and beauty of the entire orchestra of the mind.

In short, accessing the trance state can help you develop effective life skills and the best methods to move forward with life.
