Different types of anxiety disorders

There are a range of different anxiety disorders.

We have put together a non-exhaustive list of the more common disorders here:

Panic Disorder

Panic disorder involves feelings of terror or fear which strike suddenly and can happen with no warning. The panic attacks tend to occur abruptly and reach a peak after 10 minutes; however they can last for hours. A panic attack is a sudden and intense episode of fear. These attacks can strike without warning and without obvious cause. A panic attack is a physical as well as emotional reaction to fear and can often leave you feeling exhausted. Trembling, shortness of breath, chest pains, nausea, dizziness and pins and needles all combine to add to your feeling of panic. Your world may suddenly become claustrophobic leaving you desperately trying to escape and get somewhere you can breathe and feel calm. Having an attack can be a confusing experience, particularly if you cannot see the reason why you felt that sudden need to panic and flee. At MH Hypnotherapy we can help you find the cause of these attacks. We will also teach you strategies that you can use when you feel the panic setting in so you can stay in control.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder affects around 3% of the world’s population. Sufferers are plagued by constant thoughts or fears that cause them to develop obsessions (disturbing thoughts) and compulsions (ritualistic behaviour). The sufferer may realise their behaviour is irrational but they may find it difficult to stop, they are ruled by their compulsions. OCD is a serious anxiety disorder defined by obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviour. Commonly, OCD follows a cycle of obsession, anxiety and compulsion followed by temporary relief. Many of us are guilty of joking about our own OCD tendencies when we are excessively tidy or organised. We can identify with certain OCD symptoms, when we double check a lock or a switch, however someone suffering with OCD will spend hours performing rituals for some relief from their anxiety. OCD is disruptive; everyday tasks can be difficult and sometimes the anxiety can get so overwhelming it is difficult to leave the house. Thankfully, there are ways to help you cope with OCD and even help minimise the symptoms. Seeking help is an important and positive step on your way to achieving a better quality of life. At MH Hypnotherapy we can help you find the cause of your anxiety. We will teach you strategies that you can use when you feel the panic setting in so you can stay in control and not let your anxiety overwhelm you.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD can develop after a traumatic experience, extreme event or being exposed to stressful situations continuously. It can involve being haunted by frightening thoughts or memories and can result in the sufferer becoming emotionally numb. Although it is often associated with war veterans, PTSD can develop after any trauma in adults or children. Suffering from PTSD can be as distressing as the original incident as your mind forces you to relive the event in nightmares or persistent memories. This can disturb your day-to-day activities and sleep, making it difficult to move past the trauma. One of our mind’s own defense mechanisms against this kind of anxiety is to become emotionally numb. Although this may appear to help dampen the anxiety, it can have the opposite effect of exaggerating it by destroying the very relationships you need for support. Thankfully, there are ways to help you overcome PTSD. Seeking help is an important and positive step on your way to achieving a better quality of life. At MH Hypnotherapy we can help you find the cause of your anxiety. We will teach you strategies that you can use when you feel the panic setting in.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Does speaking in public fill you with dread? How about walking into a crowded room? Nobody can deny feeling even a tiny bit anxious when walking into a crowded room or speaking in public, but someone suffering from social anxiety disorder can feel anxious walking outside their front door. Going through everyday life constantly worrying that people are watching and judging you is exhausting. Anxieties like this are disruptive; sufferers miss social functions or avoid certain shops and cafes because they look too busy. Without the right help, this kind of avoidance strategy can become a way of life and can become more and more disruptive, limiting and extreme. At MH Hypnotherapy we can help you find the cause of your anxiety. We will teach you strategies that you can use when you feel the panic setting in so you can stay in control.

Generalised Anxiety Disorder

Generalised Anxiety Disorder involves strong feelings of anxiety without a real cause. We all know what it is like to feel anxious. Hot flushes, butterflies, dizziness and sickness are a completely normal reaction to daunting new situations. Everyone has felt this way about an interview, their first day at school, a new job, or even starting university. But if you suffer from Generalised Anxiety Disorder, the worry and tension that is normal and even healthy in small doses, overwhelms your everyday life. Living with Generalised Anxiety Disorder is like being a volcano. The worry and tension has no outlet and, although you may appear calm and relaxed to those around you, all that anxiety is bubbling away below the surface. At MH Hypnotherapy we can help you find the cause of your anxiety. We will teach you strategies that you can use when you feel the anxiety mounting inside.

Performance Anxiety

Performance Anxiety or stage fright is caused when someone has to perform in front of an audience. The anxiety and fear the individual experiences can happen before and / or during any activity involving presenting oneself in public. In some cases stage fright may be a part of a larger pattern of social phobia or social anxiety disorder, but for most people, stage fright is not associated with any other anxiety problems. Performance anxiety affects almost everyone at some stage in their lives. It can affect someone who is completely new to being in front of an audience as well as experienced professionals. It is regularly experienced amongst actors, comedians, musicians, and politicians. It can also affect one’s confidence in job interviews; work at university and school or social situations, where someone has to stand up to present a project or make a speech. The physical symptoms of performance anxiety include; an increased heart rate, pounding heart, shaking hands and legs, sweaty hands, diarrhoea, facial or body twitches, erectile dysfunction and a dry mouth.

At MH Hypnotherapy we can help you find the cause of your anxiety. We will teach you strategies that you can use when you feel the anxiety mounting inside, so that you can stay in control.
